later by Spain. After the 1848 war with Mexico, it became a possession of the United States and part of Utah territory and Iron County. Later a portion became part of Washington County.

Congress recognized the Colorado territory in 1861 when it became part of Conejos County. Archuleta County was formed in 1885 and named in honor of State Senator Antonio D. Archuleta. The Escalante and Spanish trails became a trade route between Santa Fe and California.

The area's first settlers were trappers, miners and traders. The military established Fort Plummer and later renamed it Fort Lewis.
